Nicknames

Let me just start out by saying I am the worst blogger ever. There. That's out of the way. Moving on.

Nicknames are such a funny thing. Before your kids are born, you stew over names and all the possible nicknames that come with them trying to get it all just right. Then their nicknames end up just....evolving... into names you usually never even thought of or intended.
For example. My parents told me they named me Nicole with the intention of calling me 'Nicky'. Well, turns out I was never a 'Nicky'. My dad and family, to this day, still call me 'Coley' (apparently it was 'Coley-o-doe' when I was smaller, thankfully shortened now). I really have no idea how it evolved but it stuck.
Wyatt and Owen both have the obvious 'Wy' and 'O' nicknames but Amelia got a bunch for some reason. We planned on 'Millie' and that has definitely stuck but she also goes by 'Mill', 'Mills', and 'Mimi'.
Now we have Weston. You would think the obvious nickname for him would be 'Wes' and it kind of is. It pops up occasionally. What we mainly call him though is 'Westy' and it's stuck.
Why?
I don't really know. It was never intended, that's for sure. It just....happened.
I seem to remember Millie calling him 'Westy Woo' soon after he was born. Or maybe it was me and she latched on to it. Not Sure. All I know is 'Westy' and 'Westy Woo' are what he mainly goes by now. Millie and I constantly sing him a song that goes to the first part of the Taps melody. "Westy Woo. I love you. Westy Woo." The last 'Woo' is almost always sung very loudly and out of tune which makes him grin and squeal. So, so very cheesy, I know, but like I said, these things just....happen.
I also ,randomly, call Weston 'Goober' or 'Goob'. I don't really think that one's going to stick forever but you never know. I went on a movie watching binge when we first brought Weston home and I felt like I was breastfeeding him CONSTANTLY. During feeding time I would go back to our bedroom and pop in a movie to give me something to do and a distraction from the pain that I always get for the first month or so. I would only watch while feeding him but, WOW, I went through a LOT of movies! Made me realize just how much time in the day was devoted to feeding him.(Got sick of movies and started reading soon after. Read a LOT of books too but that's another story.) One of the first movies was "Meet the Robinson's". I'm pretty sure 'Goober' came from that. You know, the little kid that Lewis always calls 'Goob'? It must have got stuck in my head.
It will be so interesting to see which nicknames last the test of time and which ones don't. Maybe new nicknames will evolve along the way. Who knows?!
Jason's nickname in college was 'Cookie'. I didn't even know his first name during that first little while after I met him. When we started dating and got married I thought I would always call him 'Cookie' it was stuck so bad, but it slowly faded. Why? It's a little awkward introducing your husband as 'Cookie' to someone who's never met him, and you end up introducing your spouse to a lot of people when you're first married. They just don't see the 'Cookie' thing coming. Yes. Awkward moments. People that knew us from college and some of my family still call him 'Cookie' but ,sadly, that's it.
So, here's to you nicknames and your crazy randomness. You sure make basic names, and just life in general, a little more fun.

  2. We love the nickname Westy! Long live nick names! We never would have thought we would end up with nicknames like Mookey or Gensie Lou, but we love them.
